On this 26km ride you will enjoy being surrounded by lush rain forest that is rich in a variety of flora and fauna. Along the ride there is often the opportunity to see howling monkeys, coatis, and birds like toucans, egrets and king fishers. This ride takes place on a gravel road, making it accessible to all levels of riders. The road connects the Arenal Volcano National Park to Lake Arenal, passing through the small town of El Castillo along the way to our destination. This is one of the towns that was affected by the 1968 eruption. Our guides will share more about the history of this area and the effects of the eruption along the ride. On route you will be able to cross various rivers which offer the perfect opportunity to cool down and admire the scenic beauty of this destination. This is a cheaper alternative for the spectacular El Tigre Waterfalls tour. This version of the hike is self guided and we do not include transportation, snacks, guide nor horseback ride. The trail without horses is considerably more difficult but you can also ask for a horse at the place for an extra price.The perfect combination of real hiking, waterfalls, views and bridges. We have a beautiful viewpoint that let you see 4 volcanoes: Volcán Arenal, Volcán Rincón de la vieja, Volcán Tenorio y Volcán Miravalles. Next, we will walk approximately 1 kilometer along a volcanic stone path with a moderate degree of difficulty, until we reach the viewpoint, the closest point to volcano permitted to access. At the viewpoint, our guide will provide relevant information on the formation of the Arenal Volcano, its periods of activity, as well as unpublished details of its first eruption in 1968. You can also enjoy the excellent views of the Green Lagoon and Lake Arenal. On the guide’s indication, we will begin our descent along the same trail.With a little luck, this 1.5 km (1 mi) trail will provide us with the opportunity to see a wide variety of plants and animals that inhabit the rainforest, like toucans, turkeys, orioles, peccaries, snakes, and monkeys.
